Safe Manual Handling Course (MH)

Brief Overview:

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, (as amended in 2002) apply to a wide range of manual handling activities, including:-

  • Lifting

  • Lowering

  • Pushing

  • Pulling

  • Carrying

The load may be either inanimate - such as a box or a trolley, or animate - a person or an animal.

What are my duties?

The Regulations require employers to:

  • Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable.

  • Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that can’t be avoided.

  • Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable.

Employees have duties too. They should:

  • follow appropriate systems of work laid down for their safety.

  • make proper use of equipment provided for their safety.

  • co-operate with their employer on health and safety matters.

  • inform the employer if they identify hazardous handling activities.

  • take care to ensure that their activities do not put others at risk.

Course Description:

This course provides guidance and gives useful practical advice for employers, managers, safety representatives and individual employees to update their practical skills and knowledge on how to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling.

Aims of the Course:

At the end of the course students will understand the risk of manual handling operations and will be able to identify how to move objects safely, in order that manual handling risks are reduced in the workplace.

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Identify the relevant Health & Safety information for Manual handling

  • Understand basic spinal anatomy, structure and function

  • causes of back pain

  • Manual Handling risk assessment in the work place

  • Correct positions and movements leading to moving and lifting objects.

Delivery Method:

Didactic, PowerPoint (including video clips), Group Work (buzz groups and practical scenarios).

Delivered In House (Training venues can be arranged, phone for details)

Length:

3 hours (
½ day)

Frequency:

Every 3 years

Any associated award:

Continuous assessment by trainer and a training provider certificate valid for three years
