Three day Mountain Leader First Aid course (MLFA)

Brief Overview:

The overall aim of the Mountain Leader First Aid Course is to provide the students with sufficient knowledge and skills to competently and confidently deal with a life threatening Emergency. This first aid course provides skills to assist a casualty in the mountains until professional help arrives.


Learning Outcomes:

To provide the student with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deal with a medical emergency in a remote location where the emergency services are unable to attend within the government target time.

Course content

  • Wilderness First aid kits and contents.

  • Introduction to casualty care in remote environments.

  • Incident management in the mountains.

  • Priorities at the scene of an accident.

  • Triage - prioritising of casualties.

  • Disorders of the respiratory and cardiovascular system.

  • Basic life support.

  • Control of severe bleeding and wound management.

  • Shock – diagnosis and treatment.

  • Fractures and soft tissue injuries.

  • Head and spinal trauma.

  • Wilderness medical problems.

  • Effects of changing temperatures.

  • Burns and scalds

  • Casualty handling.

  • Indoor and outdoor scenarios

Delivery Method:

PowerPoint presentations, discussions, demonstrations and video are used to present simple theory. This is combined with a significant amount of practical work, indoor scenarios and outdoor scenarios to ensure that first aid techniques are fully understood and can be applied in a variety of situations. Each participant is provided with a comprehensive first aid manual.

Target Audience:

This course is suitable for those wishing to have extended skills in mountain first aid and/or has been designated Mountain Leader (Course complies with guidelines recommended by BASI, Snowsport Scotland, BCU, MLTA, Mountain Leader Training Association)

Length:

Mountain Leader FAW - 18 hours (3 days)

Frequency:

Every 3 years

Any associated award:

External assessment by HSE assessors and a HSE FAW certificate & Training provider certificate valid for three years.
