Pediatric First Aid Course (PFA)

Brief Overview:
The overall aim of the Pediatric First Aid course is to provide the people who look after children including teachers and playgroup leaders with sufficient knowledge and skills to competently and confidently deal with a first aid emergency involving children. This course satisfies OFSTED/DfES & Sure-Start requirements for those working in care settings for the under 8's and can also be used as evidence towards some NVQ elements of E2, E3 and C2.3.

Learning Outcomes:
Provide the student with the knowledge,

Course content

Using a First Aid kit

Simple record keeping

Resuscitation (Child & Infant)

Administer first aid to a casualty who is Choking
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who is a diabetic
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who has a bite / sting
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who has an head injury
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering Asthma
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who has been Poisoned
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who has a sprains / strain
-
Administer basic first aid to a casualty who has a fractures
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding

Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from anaphylaxis
-
Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
-
Recognise and provide basic first aid for childhood conditions (e.g. measles, meningitis, croup)
-
Administer first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds)
Delivery Method:
Didactic, PowerPoint (including video
clips), Group Work (buzz groups and
practical scenarios).
Target Audience:
A person who works with children and is nominated as
the Emergency first aid person or who provides support to
qualified First Aiders in the workplace.
Course location:
Delivered In House all training venues
must comply with the HSE requirements

Length:
Initial PFA - 12 hours (2 days
minimum)
Frequency:
Every 3 years
Any associated award:
An HSE-approved certificate valid for
three years issued on completion of
assessment.
Assessment method:
Continuous assessment
during the course (we can provide a
skills-based final assessment if the
student is working towards a
Childminding NVQ qualification).
