Requalification First Aid at Work Training (RFAW)

Brief Overview:
The overall aim of the First Aid at Work
training is to comply with the Health
and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the ACOP
(approved code of practice) Health and
Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981
(Amended 2009). The course aims to
provide the students with sufficient
knowledge and skills to competently and
confidently deal with a first aid
emergency in the workplace.
The Law:
The Regulations1 require that, in order
to provide first aid to their employees
who are injured or become ill whilst at
work, employers must have suitable
people, equipment and facilities.
Regulation 3(2) says that ‘... for this
purpose a person shall not be suitable
unless he has undergone:
‘such training and has such
qualifications as the HSE may
approve..., and’
‘such additional training, if any, as
may be appropriate in the circumstances
of that case.’
Under Regulation 3(2) therefore, the HSE
will only approve FAW training and FAW
re-qualification training. As indicated
above, the Regulations are supported by
an Approved Code of Practice2.
You are advised to read both in
conjunction with this Guidance.
